There is a distinct difference between NEV and Golf Cart Insurance, but both are relatively easy to obtain if you know what to look for.
Not all insurance carriers provide insurance for golf carts but a lot of the major companies do. Such companies as State Farm, Geico, Farmers, and Progressive offer full golf cart coverage and usually at competitive rates.
Normal Golf Cart insurance rates can range from $35 to $100 per year with a deductible between $300 to $500 depending on the policy and the coverage.
Because insuring your golf cart is so cheap, you may as well get full coverage that includes both Physical Damage and Liability.
Physical Damage
- Theft
- Collision
- Vandalism
- Fire
- Adverse Weather
Liability
- Pedestrian Injury
- Property Damage
You may be able to combine your golf cart insurance policy with that of your auto insurance policy, so be sure to ask about any offers from your current carrier as you begin shopping around.
Some people think that their golf cart is covered in their homeowners policy as part of the property. Most homeowner insurance policies do not cover golf carts as part of the property, which can result in an expensive liability if misunderstood. So be sure to read the fine print.
But remember, insuring your golf cart does not necessarily make it street legal.
In order for your golf cart or NEV to be street legal it must be properly insured as such.
To insure an NEV it must be properly licensed and registered with a license plate and a VIN (Vehicle Identification Number), and you must meet your states motor vehicle insurance requirements.
If you purchase a true NEV directly from a certified dealer it will likely come with a 17 digit VIN. If your electric car does not have a VIN then it cannot be legally registered. And the ease with which to obtain a VIN depends on your state laws.
Insurance companies are treating NEVs more and more like traditional cars, which often means normal policies at standard rates. But there are companies that still offer discounted policies to NEV owners. For instance, at the time of this writing, State Farm still insures NEVs as recreational vehicles, which usually translates into a significant discount.
Policies and coverage is continually changing for Golf Carts and NEVs, so be sure check out what different insurance companies are currently offering.
